PROV-O
Modelling and structuring provenance
Provenance is the story of how something has come to be. Bettiva, Chang and Gryk (2025) provide a systematic literature review categorising the various notions of provenance in Information Sciences that paints a broad picture of the multiple uses of provenance. Their review identified six types of use of "provenance" These are:
1. Provenance as story,
2. Provenance as authenticity,
3. Provenance as performance of compliance,
4. Provenance as process,
5. Provenance as discriminator,
6. Provenance as system characterisation.
The Anam Cara provenance Creator App employs the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)'s PROV- Ontology (Moreau and Groth, 2013) in order to address, create and explore all six of these uses of Provenance in real-life practical implementations.
In PROV-O, provenance is established through representing and exploring all entities, agents and activities that have been influential through involvement and interactions in the historical provenance chain. The starting point of PROV-O is a small set of classes and properties that can be used to create provenance descriptions, thus:
· A prov: Entity is a physical, digital, conceptual, or other kind of thing with some fixed aspects; entities may be real or imaginary.
· A prov: Activity is something that occurs over a period of time and acts upon or with entities; it may include consuming, processing, transforming, modifying, relocating, using, or generating entities. The types of Activities addressed within in the Aman Crara Provenance Creator App are Transaction and Voyage
· A prov: Agent is something that bears some form of responsibility for an activity taking place, for the existence of an entity, or for another agent's activity. The types of Aaent addressed within in the Aman Creator Provenance Creator App are Agent (individual) and Community of Practice
The three primary classes relate to one another and to themselves using the properties shown in the entity-relationship diagram in figure 1.
